I’m thinking about Karl Hess these days. The man went on a pretty significant political and ideological journey during his life. It makes me wonder where the two primary political parties and their followers are now going. A more libertarian-Left? Certainly a more authoritarian-Right. How will this great shift finally shake out?
In part, it depends on which Trump appears during his 2nd Presidency. Do we get the largely incompetent and chaotic President of the 1st Term? Or something quite different?
It also depends what lessons the Democrats learn from losing this election. If the lesson is a sweeping generalization along the lines of “white men can never be trusted” (or similar) than that is a recipe for permanent 2nd party status and the authoritarian Republican Party becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
