Some fictional medieval wisdom

I’m reading one of the Brother Cadfael mystery novels right now. (No, I have not yet watched the PBS series starting Derek Jacobi.)

At a funeral in this novel, the Abbott proclaims:

For even the pursuit of excellence may be a sin, if it infringes the rights and needs of another soul.

Well said.
